Jeff’s Story

Imagine buying a brand new truck in 1999, leather seats, all set up for winter driving as you move up the coast from South Carolina to Pennsylvania. You are looking for a new job, as your current contract is over. Imaging in that same truck there is an incident with gum. Attached to the leather seat. All attempts to remove the gum fail.

You find George Elfering of Color Glo South Carolina. The gum is removed, and you have a new opportunity of interest.

In the beginning

In a nutshell, this is the beginning of a long and prosperous career for Jeff Rankin. Jeff met with Gary, purchased his franchise, and went on to train with Bill. Who talked him into buying a motorcycle? I'm sure nobody is surprised. Jeff was set on working on exotic and high-end cars. He went back to Pennsylvania, where he attempted to get work in the exotic car sector. He worked on an old Rolls Royce that belonged to Bert Reynolds and Lonnie Anderson. At one time they let Patrick Swayze borrow it.

There aren't many of those in Pennsylvania, and it gets cold. So, Jeff headed south. He wanted to live in Florida, so he went off in search of a new territory. There were a few places available Jeff tried the Clearwater area, where he couldn't give away a repair. About 10 pm one night he pulled into a hotel in Fort Lauderdale. Some kid had an Escalade that needed attention, that was hopeful. Jeff wasn't yet prepared to work there, and it was the first time he had been warm in a while. He looked across the street, he saw a Ferrari dealer. HOME!

Ferrari

Jeff landed work at the biggest Ferrari dealer in North America. The first step of his intentional plan was done, it was time to get to work. Jay Tee, Jeff's son, was with him and learning the Color Glo business. He had other interests to explore, he went to Boston and then served our Country in Iraq. (Thank you, Jay Tee!) Jeff continued building his business, wishing he had a little help.

Today Jeff and Jay Tee handle the work at about 10 shops in the Fort Lauderdale, Miami area. They specialize in high-end exotic cars. They have a great reputation in the area for having the tools, the skills, and the work ethic. Lori told me with love, "They are the hardest-working guys!"

Jeff’s Advice

Jeff gave some good advice for Color Glo owners who are new-- it goes like this: Work on what interests you. There are so many directions to go. Do work that you know will inspire reactions like--"That looks like new!" instead of jobs where you can only make a marginal difference. He recalled a time when there was a recall on Tahoes where they drilled holes in the dash to mount something. He had a customer call him to repair the dash. When the job was over, his customer was excited and grateful. The dash looked like brand new. That's the best feeling.

26 years after the Great Gum Incident, Jeff is still working alongside his partner, best friend and son, Jay Tee. It's been a good ride, Jeff is contemplating turning the business over to Jay Tee some time not too far down the road.
