Understanding The Ranking

The Franchise 500 is an annual ranking of the top 500 franchising companies in the U.S. and Canada, compiled by Entrepreneur magazine through a submission and review process. The ranking is based on an evaluation of each company's costs and fees, size and growth, franchisee support, brand strength, and financial strength and stability. The list includes both public and privately held companies and has been published annually since 1980.

Ranking Qualifications

According to Wikipedia, Each company that applies for the Franchise 500 through the online submission form is required to submit a copy of its current Franchise Disclosure Document and other supporting documents in order to verify the information submitted. All qualifying applicants are scored by Entrepreneur's proprietary formula, which evaluates franchise companies based on more than 150 data points across five pillars: costs and fees, size and growth, support, financial strength and stability, and brand strength. The 500 top-scoring companies become the Franchise 500. Entrepreneur typically receives more than 1,000 applications for the ranking annually.

In addition to the main Franchise 500 ranking, Entrepreneur uses the data provided through the Franchise 500 applications to create additional smaller rankings and lists that are published throughout the year, including "Fastest-Growing Franchises," "Top New & Emerging Franchises," "Top Low-Cost Franchises," "Top Global Franchises," "Best of the Best", "Top Franchises for Veterans", "Top Homebased/Mobile Franchises" and "Top Food Franchises.”

The Franchise Times Top 500 is an exclusive annual ranking of the 500 largest U.S.-based franchise systems by global systemwide sales. The project is the result of a five-month research and reporting effort that leads to the most credible and objective franchise ranking available said Franchise Times Editor-in-Chief Laura Michaels. The collection of systemwide sales data also provides useful insight into the franchise industry’s performance coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Every segment gained ground in 2021, with some getting back to or even surpassing 2019 sales while others still have work to do.

The home services, automotive, and cleaning franchise industries all saw percentage sales growth in the double digits last year, while retailers posted a 5.2 percent increase as stores reopened. Used goods retailers saw major growth, with Uptown Cheapskate up 62.6 percent and Once Upon a Child up 34.9 percent.

“Recovery didn’t treat all brands equally, however. In the fitness segment, system sales at Orangetheory Fitness declined 12.5 percent, a drop of more than $140 million,” continued Michaels. “Franchises in the red will have some explaining to do, especially if competitors in their category turned in standout performances.”

Understanding The Ranking

The ranking process begins with gathering the data. Starting early in the year in 2021, Entrepreneur asked franchisors to fill out our online form and submit a copy of their current Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) or Canadian Disclosure Document. Submissions are vetted by their editorial team before being entered for data analysis.

To be eligible to rank, a franchisor must be seeking new franchisees in the U.S. or Canada and must have had a minimum of 5 units open and operating as of July 31, 2021, with at least one franchise located in North America. If you've been thinking about buying a franchise -in the U.S. or any other country- consider this ranking of the top 200 franchisors that are seeking international franchisees. To compile this ranking, Entrepreneur took their Franchise 500 formula and adjusted it to give extra weight to international size and growth. Other areas evaluated by the formula include costs and fees, franchisee support, brand strength, and financial strength and stability.

Franchise Times Methodology

The Franchise Times Top 400 is an annual ranking of the 400 largest franchise systems in the United States by global systemwide sales, based on the previous year’s performance.

In a five-month research process and building upon a database that began in 1999, their research team uses a combination of companies’ voluntary reports and publicly available data, including the franchises’ most recent franchise disclosure documents and Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

The Franchise Times research team spends months compiling information for the rankings, the five-year sales history graphs, Top 10 lists, and industry subcategories, and then reconciling to ensure all published data is accurate and all estimates are based on a solid sales formula.

Franchise Times Top 400

The Research Process

  • They began in late April with their first email and a Top 400 survey, which contains contacts from a wide range of databases dating back to 1999.

  • They then entered all the survey information into their database, and during that process, they update their records with any changes to ownership, top executives, addresses, etc.

  • They verify that survey information is being reported accurately by reconciling sales, units, and unit volumes to prior years from our database. If any discrepancies are found we contact the person who completed the survey to verify the information submitted is correct.

  • To qualify, a company must be a legal U.S. franchise. Franchisees must own at least 15 percent of the company’s total units. The company must also be based in the United States, or have at least 10 percent of its total units in the United States.

  • Systemwide sales are defined as the total sales for both franchise and company units. Those sales figures should represent sales to customers, and not corporate sales to franchisees or prospective franchisees, such as royalty revenue or franchise fees.

If two companies reported the same systemwide sales, the higher ranking is given to the company with the most units. Preference is also given to companies that voluntarily report their systemwide sales, rather than those companies for which sales figures must be estimated.

Understanding The Ranking

The ranking process begins with gathering the data. Starting in June 2020, Entrepreneur asked franchisors to fill out our online form and submit a copy of their current Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) or Canadian Disclosure Document. Once again they broke the previous year’s record, with 1,116 companies supplying all the required information. Submissions are vetted by their editorial team before being entered for data analysis.

To be eligible to rank, a franchisor must be seeking new franchisees in the U.S. or Canada and must have had a minimum of 10 units open and operating as of July 31, 2020, with at least one franchise located in North America. Each eligible franchisor was scored based on more than 150 data points, and those with the highest cumulative scores became the Franchise 500.
